A STORY TOLD IN REAL-TIME OVER SEVEN DAYS ONLINE, ON TV, LIVE FROM WALES

Outside Broadcast

GALWAD broke new ground in distributing the characters and plot of the story across over a hundred pieces of content; immersing the viewer in the action through single-shot cinematography; threading BSL, Welsh and English through the script and performances and working across theatre, film and TV sectors to deliver the ambitious creative vision live from Wales. Its innovation lies in the combination of two very different forms of production – film-making and live performance and bringing those together via new forms of distribution across social media to create a story in real-time.

With sustainability at its core, the GALWAD project was seeking a live broadcasting company to produce and develop an innovative workflow to support the core values of the organisation. oXyfire pitched on a remote workflow cutting harmful C02 emissions by a massive 80% compared to a traditional outside broadcast. As a company we are and have been carbon neutral for many years, with minimal offsetting. Therefore, with sustainability at the heart of every production, we focused on every way we could minimise the production's carbon footprint. We actively strive to design innovative new workflows to reduce and stop emissions.‍ Working remotely has its challenges, the main one being communication. This project allowed us to create a ‘rock-solid’ communications strategy utilising some fantastic hardware & software we invested in during lockdown. Unity Intercom & Greengo formed the backbone of the system fully integrated with Motorola RF radios. Using a mixture of AviWest and LiveU bonded audio/video transmitters, we were able to share sub-second video to the remote creative team who could instantly give feedback to the team on the ground.

With a week full of live streams filmed in Wales and distributed from Sheffield across a variety of social media platforms, with a 5-hour live broadcast on SkyArts aka the finale. Sally Smith stepped into the directors seat and offered a steardy pair of hands allowing the technical team to push ourselves to achieve and innovate. A truly trilingual production, not only in English and Welsh but also natively in British Sign Language. With additional optional audio description and closed captions across all live streams to ensure the program was fully accessible and could be enjoyed by all.
